The stereotype plates having been wholly worn out in the publication of successive editions, the publishers have asked me to revise the book, in preparation for a new and enlarged edition,--and in particular, to add such references to the literature of the last thirty years as might carry forward the admirable plan of the author, and, for readers of the English language, might bring the book down to the present time."
