Wittke was a scholar specializing in ethnic history in America, especially of German Americans, but this book from earlier in his career is an important work in the history of minstrelsy in America, representing one of the first attempts at a comprehensive history of the origins of the practice of minstrelsy, synthesizing many early first hand accounts and sources. very good: bright orange cloth boards, slightly bumped corners, owner's name on paste down, gift inscription on FFEP, several recto pages among first 100+pp. show evidence of erased pencil scribbling, worst example pictured. text is otherwise clean and readable, binding tight. / good: faded and sunned, scuffed along edges and corners, NOT clipped ($2.50), small closed tear on bottom rear panel.
