The Journal of a Young Artist 1860-1884
Cassell and Company, 1889. first US edition. hardcover. 8vo 434pp. + illustrations. from Author's Preface: "Of what use were pretense or affectation? Yes, it is evident that I have the desire, if not the hope, of living upon this earth by any means in my power. If I do not diey young I hope to live as a great artist; but if I die young, I intend to have my journal, which cannot fail to be interesting, published."
Diary of a Russian emigre artist who lived and worked in Paris, and died in 1885 at the age of 25. An immediate success on publication in France, and only the second diary of a woman to be published in France, this is the first translated edition, abridged and bowdlerized by her family to keep out unflattering references.
